The Female Mantis is a fashion photography project that explores the relationship between female power, violence, and crime through the symbolic figure of the praying mantis. Often associated with aggression, dominance, and the myth of the “fatal female,” the mantis serves as a metaphor for women who challenge traditional gender expectations and social norms.
Drawing inspiration from real cases of female offenders, feminist history, and popular culture, the project examines how some women become perpetrators after experiencing prolonged oppression, abuse, or violence. Positioned between victimhood and resistance, these figures reveal the complex social realities behind female crime.
Through staged crime scenes, escape narratives, and prison imagery, the series constructs a fictional female protagonist whose story reflects themes of trauma, revenge, and empowerment. Rather than glorifying violence, The Female Mantis questions how society perceives women who refuse to remain passive, and explores the blurred boundaries between vulnerability, resistance, and power.
